Who is Steve Butz?

Steve Butz is a lifelong resident of South St. Louis, and he is running to represent the community that he has been a part of for the last 57 years. Steve has been married to Angie (DePalma) Butz for 42 years, and they have raised six children - Adam, Kevin, Hannah, Maria, Natalie, and Grace - and now have nine grandchildren.

Parish Support in the 81st District - St. Stephen to St. Anthony and back again

As a kid, Steve attended St. Stephen Protomartyr, graduating class of 1972. At SSP Steve got involved with the Boy Scouts, eventually earning his Eagle Scout designation. His interest in the outdoors, community, and service to others would continue well into adulthood, as Steve served on the Eagle Scout Review Board for the South City District.  When it came time to send his own six children to school, he and Angie supported the same neighborhood schools they had grown up with. The oldest Butz kids, Adam and Kevin, graduated from St. Anthony of Padua. Steve and Angie were dedicated members of the St. Anthony of Padua community, participating in scouts, the choir, children's liturgy, and parish outreach. In 1996 Steve and Angie decided to transition parishes, bringing Steve back to his alma mater at St. Stephen. The four Butz girls graduated from SSP, and Steve and Angie quickly became dedicated and lasting members of the SSP community by teaching at the school, participating on the parish finance committee, singing in the choir, and coaching dozens of teams.

High School Sweethearts and a Lasting Alumni Support

Steve attended Bishop DuBourg as a member of the inaugural 1818 gifted program through St. Louis University. Steve created a lasting relationship with his alma mater.  Steve met Angie DePalma, now Angie Butz, his sophomore year. As a student Steve was an active participant of the National Honor Society, academic clubs, and various theater groups. He and Angie continued to support their alma mater, remaining engaged members of the alumni organization and sending four of their children - Adam, Kevin, Natalie, and Grace - to DuBourg. Steve and Angie are pillars of the Bishop DuBourg alumni community, leading through philanthropic giving and participation on various leadership boards.

Local Education and Small Business Success

For college, Steve chose to stay local, graduating from University of Missouri - St. Louis.  His education prepared him to take over the family business - Crawford Butz Insurance Agency - started by his father in 1961. Steve's entrepreneurial spirit allowed him to help grow the insurance agency, and it is one of Missouri's largest family owned agencies, with branches from Illinois to Kansas City. As a small business owner, Steve is dedicated to the entrepreneurial community by serving as a volunteer with financial services education (e.g., Junior Achievement) as well as serving on professional committees and boards.  Steve also is a managing partner of another family business - Eagle Hurst Ranch - in Steelville, MO. At Eagle Hurst Steve creates a family-friendly vacation destination while getting to enjoy the beauty of Missouri wildlife.

A Lifelong Theme:  Service and Leadership

It is clear that Steve looks to serve in every community that he belongs to.  Service and Leadership are two traits that were cultivated at a young age and remain today. Steve is also loyal, choosing to remain an active member of the South City community he has belonged to his whole life.
